New York was one of the first states in the U.S. to formalize wildlife conservation. By the late 19th century, over-hunting and unregulated fishing had pushed many species toward collapse.
In response the state created what became the New York State Conservation Department in 1911 and from the late 1920s through the early 1940s they issued these metal license pins to residents who hunted, fished, and trapped its public lands and waters.
Each year brought a new color. Each button carried a serial number. Each one was worn openly, pinned to a jacket, a wool coat, a shirt pocket. Proof that you belonged out there and that you agreed to take care of what you touched.
These are each a rare piece of New York nature and outdoor history, representing the birth of regulated outdoor recreation.
Each piece has been altered to lay flat as a ball marker and features GGNC hand stamped on the reverse side. Comes in a Nature Club dust pouch.
